What does it take to serve on the Board of Directors?
Are you a strategic thinker, an inspiring leader, or someone who thrives on building connections and driving progress in real estate? If so, it’s time to consider serving on the Suncoast Tampa Association of REALTORS® (STAR) Board of Directors.
Being a director on the STAR Board means helping shape the future of our real estate community. You’ll focus on the big-picture goals, tackle challenges that matter to our members, and help guide important decisions about policies and resources. It’s about using your time, ideas, and experience to make a real impact—both now and for the future of the association.
The Nominating Committee has the task of seeking a slate of candidates for 2026. There are 7 vacant Director positions.
Members who are interested in being interviewed for potential candidacy should complete the Consent to Serve Form. They must also complete the District 6 Leadership Institute this year or in a prior year, or attend the Association Business Planning class. Additional qualifications required by the bylaws to serve on the Board of Directors:
- Be a member in good standing with dues paid by April 30, 2025.
- Complete the Association Business Planning class or the District Leadership Institute
- Complete and submit the Consent to Serve Form by July 9, 2025
- Be interviewed by the Nominating Committee on either July 22 or 23, 2025
During the recent Nominating & Credentialing Committee deliberations, the Committee focused on transparency in the selection process. Below are key highlights:
- Geographic Representation:
The Committee focused on geographic diversity based on member distribution, as stated in the STAR Bylaws, using member home address census data:
• Hillsborough: 3–4
• Pinellas: 2–3
• Pasco: 1–2
This year’s slate includes 3 nominated candidates from Hillsborough, 3 nominated candidates from Pinellas, and 1 nominated candidate from Pasco.
However, during elections, popular vote prevails—geography will not override vote totals.
- Brokerage Cap:
A maximum of 2 members from the same brokerage may serve on the Board (excluding the President and President-Elect). If more are elected, only the 2 members with the highest number of votes from that brokerage will serve. Others may remain eligible as alternates if a vacancy occurs.
We hope this provides clarity on the committee’s approach and ensures a fair and balanced slate.
Requirements to Serve: Any REALTOR® Member in good standing may seek election as a Member of the Board of Directors. Members must have completed the Association’s District Leadership Institute or comparable leadership training (US Chamber, Local/State/National REALTOR’S® Leadership, ASAE, FSAE, etc.) and must submit evidence of completion with the Consent to Serve form and have a Minimum twenty-four (24) months as an active licensed real estate agent or broker. Members must also participate in the Nominating & Credentialing interview process, to be held the week of July 21.
For the purposes of this Article XI, “good standing” shall mean a Member who has:
- Paid all dues, fees, fines and assessments to the association;
- No FREC or Code of Ethics violations on their record within the preceding five (5) years; and
- Complied with the Code of Ethics requirements.
Function of Directors: The business and affairs of STAR are managed by, or under the authority of, the Board of Directors and as such, the Board of Directors is authorized to do all lawful acts that are not otherwise required to be done by its members (i.e. vote to merge or consolidate).
Term: Elected Directors shall serve for a term of two years or until their successors are elected and may serve no more than two (2) consecutive terms, four (4) years. Terms of office shall begin on January 1, following the election.
Firm Affiliation: No more than two Members from the same firm shall serve on the Board of Directors, not including the President and Past President. If a Member of the board creates a circumstance in which more than two Members from the same firm serve on the board because of a transfer of firm affiliation, the transferring Member shall serve the remainder of the term.
Time Commitment: Travel to and from meetings plus the typical meeting duration of 75-minutes (or more as needed).
Meetings: Meetings of the Board of Directors will be held quarterly.
Attendance: Absence from two (2) meetings during the year shall be construed as resignation unless the Association receives a request for an excused absence before the Board of Directors meeting.
Application for Service: Any REALTOR® Member in good standing may apply to serve as a STAR Director. Director solicitation begins on June 1 and ends on July 9. The STAR Nominating and Credentialing Committee will conduct interviews the week of July 21. STAR Director elections are held in September.
